There’s this common misconception from both libertarians and non-libertarians that libertarianism is the solution to all problems. That if we simply reduce or abolish the state that politics would be over.
In libertarian circles, it seems that having a belief system that doesn’t completely revolve around the state is frowned upon. You’re not supposed to put any moral value on anything outside of reducing the government’s influence. My more right wing friends poke fun at me saying that I’m not actually a libertarian because of my focus on immigration. In debates, some bad faith libertarians say that i’m violating liberty because I disagree with a company going woke - even though i’ve never and would never argue for state interference. Nevertheless, a part of me feels like i’m betraying my libertarian principles by focusing on topics such as gender ideology and immigration outside the framework of the state.
But how can I ignore the current crisis of mass immigration that has been forced on the West? Not only is this immoral because it’s mainly caused by state action, with the government using the native population to pay for the housing, healthcare and education of the foreign born population. But it’s immoral that the history and culture of so many great nations is now being obliterated and their homeland is no longer recognisable.
As long as it doesn’t conflict with liberty, I don’t see why having values outside of libertarianism should be an issue.
Two things can be true at once. You can believe that strong demographic change is a problem without advocating for state expansion. You can believe that traditional gender roles are important without advocating for state expansion. You can take pride in your countries culture without advocating for state expansion. In fact, if you agree with any of these issues i’d argue you should be talking about them as much as the evils of statism considering their threat to the west.
Politics outside the state needs to exist in order for a libertarian society to be possible. After all, what’s the point of libertarians arguing for freedom of speech if you’re called a fake libertarian by using the freedom of speech to voice any opinion about social or cultural issues?
Just as many statists believe that the state is the answer to everything, libertarians shouldn’t fall into the trap that abolishing the state is the answer to everything.
There’s much more beyond the state.
